About

Rosalie Matchett’s art explores our relationship with the natural world. She has always experimented with the surface quality of her work, playing with the tension between the illusion of an image and the material presence of the painting. When she discovered the encaustic medium she was delighted with its rich translucency, textural possibilities and its sheer physical presence.

Rosalie grew up in Toronto. In 1982 she received her BFA in studio art from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. In 1987 she completed a diploma in film production at the London International Film School with a distinction in script writing. She continued living in England for the next 17 years, working occasionally in film while raising her two children. In 2001 she moved back to Canada and begin a visual art practice in painting. Rosalie’s paintings have won awards in Canada and the United States. Rosalie teaches encaustic technique on Salt Spring Island and is an executive board member of the Salt Spring Art’s Council.
